Cary Awarded Grant From Alzheimer’s Foundation of America

The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA) announced that is has awarded grant funding to the Cary Medical Center in Caribou for its Rural Education Program.

Cary Medical Center’s Alzheimer’s Rural Education Program will be a traveling Alzheimer’s Educational Exhibit that features books, brochures, DVDs and other literature about the disease. The program will also identify local resources where caregivers can find help and support.  The $5,000 grant awarded by AFA will be used to support the program.

“Cary Medical Center plays a vital role in improving the quality of life for individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias, and their families,” said Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr., president and CEO of AFA.  “Their Rural Education Program will be a remarkable resource that will connect residents with the information and services they need.  AFA is pleased to support this project and help the Center make a difference for the families they serve.”

“I really believe in this project”, said Bill Flagg, Director of Community Relations and Development at Cary Medical Center.  “I am so grateful to AFA for their generous support.  AFA makes a tremendous amount of resources available to Alzheimer’s patients and their caregivers and we intend to work closely with the foundation to make this project a model program.”

The funding will allow the hospital to work with the six Healthy You communities, Caribou, Washburn, Fort Fairfield, Limestone Van Buren and Presque Isle to develop special Alzheimer’s focused presentations for local public libraries.  The program coordinator will meet with library managers and schedule formal dates where they will be available to meet with members of the community to identify resources.  Books focusing on caregiving will be provided to the libraries along with other brochures, and additional resources.

The funding was awarded through AFA’s Bi-annual Grant Program, which provides grants to non-profit AFA member organizations for programs and services that help further AFA’s mission of delivering optimal care and services to individuals living with Alzheimer’s disease and related illnesses, and to their families and caregivers.
