The Aroostook County Sheriff’s Office says a second man has been charged with the theft of donations for a youth event as well as the theft of a snowmobile from a local business.

On February 21, the Sheriff’s Office investigated a report of a theft of money from a donation jar at North Star Variety in New Sweden. According to the store owner, two men arrived at the store on snowmobile. One of the men distracted the store clerk while the other stole the money out of the jar. The donations were to be used to fund a local youth ice fishing tournament.

Deputy Corey Saucier was able to identify one of the men involved in the theft as 26-year-old Matthew Cocheran of Fort Fairfield. Cocheran was arrested the following day at his residence.

Deputy Saucier also identified the second suspect as 41-year-old Jeffrey Thibodeau Jr. of Caribou. Thibodeau was arrested on Wednesday, February 28 by Officer Keith Ouellette of the Caribou Police Department. He is charged with 2 counts of class C theft due to multiple priors as well as criminal trespass.

The investigation also revealed that Cocheran and Thibodeau broke into an impound lot of a Limestone wrecker service and stole the snowmobile. They are both being charged with this offense.

The Sheriff’s Office appreciates the public’s assistance in this case.
