Body of Fredericton Woman Recovered from River, Driver Charged
Police in New Brunswick have recovered the body of a 24-year-old woman from the St. John River after being involved in a car crash on Friday.
26-year-old Marc-André Doucet of Fredericton has been charged with impaired driving in connection with the crash.
Fredericton police say speed and alcohol were factors in the crash and the two people in the car were not wearing seatbelts.
They say the black Mazda went off road on the green off St. Anne's Point Drive, striking a rock, lamp post and tree before coming to rest on its side near the river. The Green is a popular area with a trail that runs parallel to the St Anne's bypass.
The victim's name has not been officially released, but family and friends of Fredericton resident Jennifer Brewer held a candlelight vigil near the crash site Saturday night.
Members of the Fredericton police diving team spent much of the day Saturday searching for the woman before her body was recovered on Sunday morning.
Doucet was treated in hospital for minor injuries and is set to appear in court on Monday.
