Augusta Police are investigating after human remains were found by a pedestrian on Sunday.

The remains were found by someone walking on the north end of Washington Street, just north of Mill Park, at around 1:30 Sunday afternoon. According to the Kennebec Journal, the incident was initially labeled as 'suspicious activity,' with police officers on the scene until around 8 p.m.

Augusta Police are working with Gardiner Police and the State Police Major Crimes Unit, but officials say identification could take some time. Very little evidence was found with the remains to give clues to the person's identity, according to investigators.

Police say there's no danger to the public.
