Hunters are taking to the woods in hopes of bagging a big moose. The 2015 moose hunting season officially got underway this morning in Maine in the far reaches of the state.

This session of the moose hunt ends on Saturday, October 3rd.

Other moose hunting sessions run from October 12th through the 17th and November 2nd through the 7th in other parts of the state. There is also a Maine “resident only” day in a limited part of the state on October 31st.

The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife issued 2,740 moose permits this year. That is the fewest in 12 years.

Biologists say parasites such as winter ticks are a threat to northern New England’s moose herd.

If you're out hunting, good luck to you!
