Maine Department of Public Safety Public Information Officer Shannon Moss said an 11-year-old child died at the scene of a two vehicle crash Wednesday morning on Route 1 in Edmunds Township, Maine.

The Maine State Police and the Washington County Sheriff's Office responded to the crash near the intersection of Tide Mills Road approximately 7:11 a.m., January 26.

Police said a 2006 silver Buick was traveling south on Route 1 when the driver and lone occupant “ lost control of his vehicle, skidded across the roadway and was struck by an oncoming vehicle.” He had minor injuries and was taken to the hospital.

Moss said the 11-year-old was a passenger in the back seat of the second vehicle, a blue 2010 Toyota Prius Lucerne.  The child was critically injured in the crash and pronounced dead at the scene. The driver sustained minor injuries and was taken to the hospital.

Moss said “in an effort to be sensitive to all parties involved we are not releasing the names of the drivers or the deceased until the crash report is completed.”

Route 1 and Tide Mills Road were shut down for several hours. Both roads are now reopened.

Multiple agencies assisted including the Whiting Fire Department, the Downeast Ambulance Service, the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, the Maine State Police. Moss said many Washington County citizens helped out as well.
