On Sunday, September 23, 2018, the Presque Isle Elks, Lodge #1954, held its seventeenth, consecutive annual “Soccer Shoot”, at the University of Maine at Presque Isle Gentile Hall athletic field.

Competitors under the age of 8 years had three attempts each to kick a youth size, #4, soccer ball, from fifteen feet away, through five different size goals, ranging in size from 48 inches wide to 17 inches wide, with greater points being awarded as the goals became smaller.  The winners were Brayden Amero, son of Kara Ouellette and Dan Amero of Caribou and Jenna Strid, daughter of Joann Reiersen of Caribou.

Youth competing in the age 8 and 9-year-old division had fifteen attempts each to kick a youth-size soccer ball from a distance of eighteen feet into a regulation goal divided into nine sections, with greater points awarded to the balls kicked through those sections of the goal more difficult to defend, such as the top corners.  Winners in this division were Blayne Tardif, daughter of Robby and Jaime Tardif of Mapleton and Ashton Bugbee, son of Morgan and Ryan Bugbee of Presque Isle.

Soccer Shoot” entrants in the 10 and 11-year-old division had fifteen attempts each to kick a youth-size soccer ball from 21 feet away from the goal divided into 9 sections.  The winners in this division were Grace Ellis, daughter of Perrin Ellis of Easton and Brent Greenlaw, son of Ben and Katie Greenlaw of Presque Isle.

The 12 and 13-year-old competitors had fifteen attempts each to kick a regular, number 5 size soccer ball from 27 feet away into the regulation size goal divided into nine sections.  Winners in the oldest age group were Taylor Marston, daughter of Aaron Marston of Presque Isle and Dawson Kinney, son of Kim Kinney of Presque Isle.

In addition to the trophies presented to all, the winners earned the right to compete in the Northern Maine District “Soccer Shoot” to be held in Bangor on Sunday, September 30.  Winners from that competition will advance to the State of Maine “Soccer Shoot” to be held at the Augusta Elks Lodge in October.
