It's a perfectly normal thing to ask of perfectly normal country singers. Garth Brooks has done it. Carrie Underwood still does it. New artists spend hours doing it. Everyone reads radio liners scripted to give a radio station added credibility, but Wheeler Walker Jr. is no ordinary country singer, and this was no ordinary read.

The often profane, always unpredictable country singer stepped in front of a microphone and camera to read liners scripted for Taste of Country, Taste of Country Nights radio and several Taste of Country affiliates. An example stolen from the script?

"Hey y'all, this is 'Ol Wheeler Walker Jr. and you're listening to my buddy Sam Alex on Taste of Country Nights."

What could go wrong?

If you're familiar with Walker Jr. you might know the answer. His new Ol' Wheeler album (June 2) includes seemingly innocent-sounding country titles like "Summers in Kentucky" that quickly take a left turn into X-rated territory. Other printable titles include "Small Town Saturday Night" and "Pictures on My Phone" but the signature tracks ("P---y King," "Poon") are not ones you'd play at a family reunion, traditionally.

"Traditional" describes Walker Jr., however. In fact, his fans argue that he's the most traditional artist of today, and musically, that's tough to argue. He leans into a sound crafted by legends named Hank or Willie. But lyrically, he takes liberties with traditional themes of heartbreak, summer love and romance.

Ol' Wheeler is Walker Jr.'s second studio album, the follow-up to his 2016 debut Redneck S--t. Dave Cobb (Chris Stapleton) produced both, and this new project includes a song co-written by Shane McAnally.
