Tonight in the state capital of Augusta, Janet Mills will raise her hand and take the oath to become the first woman governor in Maine's 199-year history.

A ceremonial session of the Maine legislature will convene at 6pm at the Augusta Civic Center, decorated today for the historic occasion. In a break with tradition, outgoing Republican governor Paul LePage isn't expected to attend the event.

Janet Mills, who defeated six primary opponents in June and then two other candidates in the general election in November, will take the oath of office and give an inaugural address that will be broadcast live across the state.
