It can be rewarding being a teacher, especially when you've had an impact on many students' lives. UMPI has honored two alumni's with achievement awards.

The University of Maine at Presque Isle and the Alumni Association recently honored two alumni with awards of achievement - The Educator of the Year Award and Distinguished Educator Award.

The event took place at the University's Second Annual Alumni Hour on Saturday, Oct 7 during Homecoming 2017 for their Friends and Family Weekend.

Alumna Judith L. Kierstead Atcheson, a graduate of Presque Isle High School in 1975,  was recognized for her lifelong achievements in education and received the Educator of the Year Award, after 40-years of experience as an educator. Atcheson served as an elementary teacher since 1979 and was part of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics and State of Maine Solid Foundations Conference in 1999.

Jeanie McGowan, who was raised in Presque Isle, was posthumously awarded the Distinguished Alumni Award, which goes to alumnus or alumna who has made long-term contributions of the Alumni Association or the University, or who has received the professional recognition that has reflected positively on the University. McGowen worked at UMPI for four years and assisted in writing grants and implementing efforts like the Traveling Trunks program for local school children.
