For guys like Jerry Perkins and Ivan Braun, the 1965 UMaine football team and its Tangerine Bowl appearance are vivid memories even though 50 years have gone by.

Perkins and Braun were side by side on the offensive line as a tackle and guard.

The '65 Tangerine Bowl team will be honored and celebrated this weekend as part of homecoming festivities when this year's Black Bears take on Yale.

That team from 50 years ago won its first eight games, including wins over Boston University and Vermont, who do not have football programs today. The Bears also beat UMass, UNH, UConn and Youngstown State.

Names such as hall of famer John Huard and quarterback Dick DeVarney headlined the only Maine team to play in a bowl game.

The Bears were outmatched in Orlando, Florida, losing to East Carolina  31-0.

NOTE:  Jerry Perkins and Ivan Braun will be guests on today's Morning Pitch Show at 7:35am to talk about the Tangerine Bowl year and the upcoming festivities this weekend. Listen on Sports Radio 92.9 The Ticket and 929theticket.com.
