The UMaine hockey team got a season opening night 3-3 tie with Michigan State. And, the Bears also got a shootout win.

At the Ice Breaker Tournament in Portland Maine had a one goal lead three times only to see the Spartans find a way to tie it. Michigan State's goal to tie it at 3-3 came with 1:09 left in regulation.

Black Bears goals came from Will Merchant, Brian Morgan and Blaine Byron.

After a scoreless five minute overtime period the tournament rule is to determine a winner in a shootout. That's when Steven Swavely scored the winner.

UM goallie Matt Morris stopped 33 shots and all three Spartan shootout attempts.

In the eyes of the NCAA and in the record books the game is a 3-3 tie. The shootout is to determine the tournament winner.

The Bears take on North Dakota tonight at 8pm in the final game of the Ice Breaker.

NOTE:  North Dakota defeated Lake Superior State 5-2.
