The University of Maine basketball teams picked up two victories against the UMass Lowell River Hawks on Wednesday evening.

The women’s team bested UMass Lowell on the road and picked up a comfortable 65-44 win, while the men’s side won on a last second basket by Wes Myers who secured the 73-71 victory.

Both teams will be back in action on Saturday afternoon against the Stony Brook Seawolves.

Maine 65-44 Lowell – Women’s Basketball A strong second quarter propelled the Black Bears to second conference victory as they outscored the River Hawks 27-6 in that frame.  Laia Sole again led a Sigi Koizar-less Black Bear squad, as the freshman went 9-12 from the field in the contest.  Fanny Wadling also chipped in with 12 points in the win, playing 22 minutes.  UMaine moves to 9-9 overall and 2-1 in conference play.  They head back on the road again to face Stony Brook on Saturday.

Maine 73-71 Lowell – Men’s Basketball The Black Bears snapped a seven game losing streak with a last second drive by Wes Myers to give UMaine the two point edge.  Myers had a game high 31 points and shot 55 percent from the floor, scoring 22 points in the second half.  Maine led for much of the first half before losing the lead at the break.  UMaine would chip away in the second half and took down the first conference victory of the season.  Austin Howard had 18 points and Ryan Bernstein added 15 of his own.  The win was the fifth of the season for UMaine and they are now 1-2 in America East play
