Two Men Charged With Heroin Trafficking in Southern Aroostook

Two men have been charged with trafficking in heroin in southern Aroostook County after sheriff's deputies pulled over a car on Interstate 95 Sunday evening.

Sheriff Darrell Crandall said his office received a tip through their Crimestoppers program that a Sherman man was traveling out of state to buy heroin which would be sold in Southern Aroostook County. At about 5:30 p.m. Sunday, deputies followed the suspect’s 2007 Chevy Impala back into Aroostook County on I-95 and stopped the vehicle.

A K-9 from Customs and Border Protection alerted officers to the presence of drugs in the vehicle. Deputies searched the car and discovered a package of heroin hidden under the spare tire in the trunk, Crandall said.  Additional heroin and 60 tablets of Valium was found on both occupants of the vehicle.

Scott Rand, 50, of Sherman Mills, and Jordan Anderson, 26, of Patten were charged with Class A, Aggravated Trafficking in Heroin.  Police said the retail street value of the more than twenty-three grams of heroin is estimated at just over $7,000.

Rand and Anderson made initial court appearances via video conference from the Aroostook County jail Monday morning. Bail was set at $10,000 cash or $50,000 surety. If convicted, both men face a minimum four year prison term.  The Maine Drug Enforcement Agency is continuing the investigation.
