Members of the Bathurst RCMP responded to the crash on Route 8 at around 2 a.m.  Corporal Roch Lizotte said a vehicle travelling north collided with an southbound transport truck.

Both occupants of the vehicle, a 26-year-old man from Saint-Anne, near Bathurst, and a 22-year-old woman from Petit-Rocher, passed away at the scene as a result of injuries. The driver of the transport truck was not injured in the crash, Lizotte said.

The coroner and an RCMP collision reconstructionist attended the scene. It's believed that the vehicle crossed the centre line, into the path of the oncoming truck, but the exact cause of the crash remains under investigation.

Route 8 near Allardville remained closed Wednesday morning to traffic in both directions.
