A tractor trailer struck a State Police cruiser Thursday on I-295 near Richmond. Trooper Greg Stevens has been transported to Maine Medical Center in Portland with non-life threatening injuries.

Trooper Stevens was able to walk away from the wreck, according to Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland. His cruiser was rear-ended by a tractor trailer just north of the Richmond exit on the northbound side. The truck then caught fire and ended up in the median - the truck driver was not injured.

Northbound lanes had been shut down but one lane has reopened. Traffic was backed up for several miles on the northbound side. Motorists were urged to use Route 201 or the Maine Turnpike to detour around the crash site for the afternoon.

The trooper’s SUV had been in the breakdown lane just prior to the collision. The fire destroyed the truck, and also caused a grass fire in the median, which was put out by area fire departments.
