Land rover 'Curiosity' has been cruising around Mars for the last 5 years. Scientists are now naming certain locations on the Red Planet after town names in Maine.

Katie Stack Morgan of California and Dr. R. Aileen Yingst of Brunswick had the great idea to name different locations on Mars after town names in the Pine Tree State.

Names such as Isle au Haut, Rockport, and Kennebec, to name a few. Other town names from Maine like Cape Elizabeth and Mt. Battie were also on the list.

The rover, Curiosity, landed on Mars in 2012 and has driven on or about 10 miles or 16 kilometers altogether.

It's good to know that there are areas on Mars named after towns in our state. If they ever get space travel going, I'm sure the first stops we'll want to visit are the areas named after the great towns in Maine.
