Ever been to Cliff Island? Cliff Island is the smallest year-round island in Casco Bay and is the last stop on Casco Bay Ferry Lines. The island didn't always wear the "Cliff" name tag. The former moniker inspired by the island's shape is enough to make anyone with a third-grade sense of humor giggle a little too much.

Cliff Island's original name was...

Crotch Island

The H-shaped island and it's natural harbors were the reason behind it's former name. However, Maine already had a Crotch Island in Stonington, so this lead to some confusion. Can you imagine the conversations? "Which Crotch are we talking about?"

Although the hotels are gone and the roads are unpaved, Cliff Island continues to be a destination for seasonal travelers looking for a quiet island to spend their summers.
