So the population in Presque Isle, Maine has gone up a bit in the last few days. Plus, the language barrier has gotten a bit wider. The 2014 Jr/Youth World Biathlon Championships will descend upon the Star City this weekend. If you happen to drive through the city, or even the side streets for that matter, you'll notice a lot of runners in multi-colored sports gear. These are world-class athletes and their training is never-ending.

You may have seen a few athletes stopping into stores to get supplies but make no bones about it, it's just a pit stop between training sessions, or even a marathon eating session. Did you know that those that take up this sport tend to consume 5000 calories per day. I found a video that highlights the training of a typical athlete in biathlon and let's just say they're tougher than I am.

Don't miss the Opening Ceremony on Thursday night, February 27th at UMPI's Gentle Hall. The event gets underway at 7:30 and is free to the public. Let's welcome these hard-working, world-class athletes the way they deserve.
