A few clicks and a simple search could net you some of the nearly $300 million dollars Maine has sitting around in unclaimed property

Good news for the Mapleton Fire Department! On Wednesday, U.S. Senators Susan Collins and Angus King and Congressman Bruce Poliquin announced that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Federal Emergency Management Agency will award the Mapleton Fire Department $38,334 as part of the Assistance to Firefighter Grant.

Five Aroostook County communities have been awarded funding under the Community Development Block Grant Program to purchase new equipment, hire new employees and more. The latest round includes funding from the Economic Development and Micro-Enterprise Assistance grant programs.

It was announced on Tuesday morning that seven Maine airports were awarded federal grants totaling more than $2 million from the Federal Aviation Administration to be used for general improvements and safety enhancements, two of them are in Aroostook County.

Funds are on their way to help Maine's low income residents heat their homes this winter, as the state is getting a $35.3 million payment from the federal government.

The struggling economy has affected some more than others.  Job losses, salary cuts and overall restructuring are a harsh reality of the times we find ourselves in.  As many in Aroostook County try to pick themselves and move on, some welcome news comes out of the Labor Department.
