State Police say 55-year-old Steve McGouldrick of Calais was driving an SUV with three passengers on Route 6 near Topsfield around 4:20 Monday afternoon when he lost control of the vehicle on the icy road.

The SUV rolled down an embankment and landed on its roof in a stream in about 2 1/2 feet of water. Police say McGouldrick and his adult passengers, 53-year-old Brenda Haney of Calais and 34-year-old Beverly Metcalf of Talmadge made it out of the overturned vehicle safely, but Metcalf's baby girl was trapped in her car seat.

State Police say Leo Moody of Kingman immediately stopped to help, and crawled into the icy water and used his knife to cut the straps on the infant’s seat and pulled her out.

Another man, identified as 28-year-old Wade Shorey of Greenbush, used  CPR to revive the infant, and she was breathing on her own within a couple of minutes.

Maine State Police, Calais EMS, Baileyville and Topsfield Fire Departments and the U.S. Border Patrol responded to the accident.  Emergency responders said the infant had taken water into her lungs

The three adults sustained minor injuries and were transported with the baby to Calais Regional Hospital.  The infant was taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor for observation, but is expected to be okay.
