Maine State Police say a trooper remains hospitalized after his cruiser was rear-ended by a tractor trailer on the Maine Turnpike early Friday morning.

John Davis is being treated at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston for multiple injuries –none of them considered life-threatening, according to State Police spokesman Steve McCausland.

The crash took place just after 5 a.m. in New Gloucester, near the Auburn town line. Trooper Davis had earlier responded to the scene after two vehicles slid off the icy highway.

Davis’ cruiser was parked in the breakdown lane with its emergency lights on, when it was struck by the big rig, McCausland said. The trooper was sitting in the vehicle at the time. The impact of the crash turned the Ford Explorer around in the roadway and forced it into the guardrail where it came to rest on its side. Davis was pinned inside the cruiser for a time.

State Police cited the truck driver for imprudent speed and a log book violation. The driver is identified as 28-year-old Aminder Munday of Westland, Michigan. The truck was loaded with food goods bound for the Walmart distribution center in Lewiston.

The northbound side of the turnpike between Gray and Auburn was closed for about 4 hours Friday morning, McCausland said.

Davis is a 17-year veteran of the Maine State Police and is assigned to Troop G, which patrols the turnpike.
