Boston Red Sox reliever Carson Smith will start the season on the disabled list. The team now says his injury is a strain of the flexor muscle and there is no timetable yet on when he might resume throwing.

Smith left Monday's exhibition game after throwing just four pitches, complaining of cramping in his forearm.

At this point, the Sox think rest and rehab will work and surgery is not the course of action.

The 26-year-old Smith came in the Wade Miley trade from Seattle. He was expected to be a big part of the bullpen in late innings. That job now could be handed over to Matt Barnes.

Smith joins Eduardo Rodriguez on the Sox DL to start the season.
