Smith To Return On Tuesday For Red Sox

Boston Red Sox reliever Carson Smith is set to be activated by the team for the upcoming six game road trip for the big league club.

Smith was one of the centerpieces of the trade that sent Wade Miley to Seattle this past off-season and the right-hander has yet to make his first appearance with Boston due to a forearm strain that occurred back in Spring Training.

Recently Smith was sent to Portland to rehab with the Sea Dogs and compiled one and two thirds innings pitched of perfect ball from the hill.  He appeared in two games over the weekend and struck out two of the five batters he faced.  Boston said they would likely not over extend the pitcher in his early appearances with the club.  Smith had a 2-5 record with a 2.31 ERA in 70 innings a year ago with the Mariners.

The Red Sox will need to make a roster move to make room for Smith and position players Marco Hernandez and Josh Rutledge are candidates to go down to Pawtucket.  Matt Barnes and Heath Hembree could also be considered to be sent down if Boston decides to only keep 12 pitchers on the roster.

Boston faces the Chicago White Sox in the first game of the three games series on Tuesday evening at 8:10 p.m.
