The Maine Drug Enforcement Agency and Sanford Police have charged a teen and his uncle with operating a meth lab in a Sanford apartment.

Arrested were 18-year-old Tanner Winship and 40-year-old Herbert Winship, both of Sanford.

Police responded to the residence Sunday evening after receiving a report of a noxious odor coming from a Charles Street apartment, according to the MDEA. The drug agency’s lab team also responded and found evidence of meth-making inside, and a mason jar containing the addictive drug. The team cleared the home early Monday morning.

A few hours later, Sanford Police were called to an adjacent property on Grove Street for a suspicious duffel bag in the yard. Found inside the bag were the ingredients to make meth, and a plastic bottle where meth was being cooked. Drug agents are now investigating whether the two men were also responsible for the duffel bag.

The two are being held at the York County Jail, in lieu of $15,000 bail. The older man was arrested by State Police Monday at a home in Lyman on unrelated charges for violating his probation. The meth charge was added on Tuesday.

These are the 8th and 9th meth lab responses by the MDEA this year. Last year, there were 125 in Maine.
