Sam Hunt Covers Little Big Town’s ‘Girl Crush’ [WATCH]
Little Big Town's "Girl Crush" has earned a plethora of honors since its release as a single in December of 2014: The song won two CMA Awards and two Grammys, received two ACM Awards nominations, broke a long-standing chart record and recently went double platinum. On Monday night (April 18), "Girl Crush" was named Song of the Year by the Association of Independent Music Publishers, and during the ceremony, Sam Hunt performed a cover of the tune.
Flanked by two additional acoustic guitarists, the singer-songwriter sang a stripped-down, simple version of the massive hit, accompanying himself on acoustic guitar as well and letting the inherent soulful qualities of his voice shine through. While Hunt often draws criticism for his own music not being "country enough," the artist shows his chops through covers like this one. He's been known to bust out a little Waylon Jennings and a pretty epic medley of ’90s country women, and he also recently covered Merle Haggard's "The Way I Am."
“I love so many styles of music. I wish I could make multiple records, stylistically,” Hunt, who is currently working on his sophomore album, says. “The way that I’m gonna remedy that is to make a diverse record with a lot of different styles on one record.”
Hunt's "Girl Crush" cover was part of the festivities at the 2016 AIMP Nashville Awards, which honored seven winners in categories representing all aspects of independent music publishing. “Girl Crush” received Song of the Year during the awards ceremony. Brandy Clark, Kelsea Ballerini, Tyler Farr, Old Dominion and Maren Morris and the Brothers Osborne also performed; Morris and the Osbornes' cover of Chris Stapleton's "Fire Away" drew loud cheers of approval from the crowd.
