RCMP Warning of ‘Mystery Shopper’ Fraud
RCMP in southwestern New Brunswick have received calls regarding a fraud currently being attempted in the Charlotte County area.
Local residents have received false cheques in the mail with an accompanying letter instructing the receiver to deposit the cheque in their personal accounts, and then purchase items for the letter sender, with the promise of making a profit.
RCMP say there is no profit to be made, and the victim may be responsible for the money when the cheque is discovered to be counterfeit.
The envelopes and the letters enclosed may be inscribed with the words "Mystery Shopper Survey," as well as other fraudulent company names. Police says money should never be sent to questionable businesses/addresses.
Anyone receiving these types of letters is advised not to deposit the cheque or make contact with the company. The scam can be reported to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre online and at 1-888-495-8501.
Anyone who has been a victim of fraud is asked to call their local police.
