The RCMP has confirmed that a woman whose body was discovered following a house fire in Val-d'Amour, New Brunswick was the victim of a homicide and that the fire was deliberately set.

Members of the Campbellton RCMP were called Saturday morning to a fire at a residence on Rue Melanson, after firefighters discovered the body of a woman inside the home.

The victim has been identified as 71-year-old Lucille Maltais, who lived in the home. The investigation has led police to believe that her death was a homicide and that the fire was the result of arson, according to Constable Hans Ouellette.

The RCMP in New Brunswick's Major Crime Unit has been investigating and confirmed the details of the case on Tuesday.
