Presque Isle Man Dies After Being Shot in Confrontation With Police Officer
A Presque Isle man who was shot during an armed confrontation with a police officer on Saturday evening has died at a Bangor hospital.
The Presque Isle Police Department says Eastern Maine Medical Center has notified them that 29-year-old Derek Sam passed away at 12:35 a.m. Tuesday.
Sam was airlifted to the Bangor hospital in critical condition Saturday night after he was shot by a Presque Isle Police Officer in a Main Street parking lot. Police said Sam had aggressively approached the officer with a knife and he was shot after a TASER failed to stop him.
He was reportedly wounded in the abdomen and had undergone surgeries at EMMC before passing away early Tuesday.
The Office of the Maine Attorney General is continuing its investigation into the use of deadly force.
