Presque Isle Historical Society Receives Prestigious Award

Maine Preservation announced winners of the 2017 Honor Awards, celebrating outstanding examples of historic preservation and revitalization statewide and recognizing the owners, professionals, preservationists and partners who make them possible.

The 2017 Honor Awards, held recently at the Portland Country Club in Falmouth, recognized 16 projects and one individual nominated earlier this year.   Maine Preservation has been recognizing historic preservation successes across the state since 1998.

Presque Isle Historical Society was one of the sixteen recognized this year for its efforts in renovating the historic Maysville Grange building.  The site located at 165 Caribou Road served simultaneously as the Maysville Town Hall, Maysville School, and Maysville Grange.  The Society completed renovations this summer and opened a museum in the repurposed building on July 1.  Also, recognized as part of this renovation process were A & L Construction, the contractor of record, and BR Smith & Associates, the engineers for the project.

The project was one of only two recognized that was not a commercial development project and the only historical society recognized.  It was also the only organization receiving an award from Aroostook County.  Society Directors Kim Smith and Rick Nadeau traveled to Falmouth for the presentation.  Smith states, “We were very humbled to be included with these other amazing projects and absolutely thrilled that our efforts were recognized.  This award is validation for the hard work by all involved in bringing this project to fruition and hopefully will be a feather in our cap when applying for future grants.”
