The fundraising campaign for a new Presque Isle Community Center has taken a big jump forward with a $1,500,000 planned giving donation from Bruce Sargent and his family.

Sargent, a city councilor and business owner said, “Things today are not the same as they were 30 years ago.  Our community needs an active Community Center now more than ever…Kids need a safe place to spend time after school and during the summer months engaging with their peers in physical and social activities."

Presque Isle voters approved the 3.5 million dollar project in November 2012 and various fundraising efforts have been underway since then.

"The current building was never designed to be a Community Center with recreational programming. It’s old, tired and run down, Sargent stated. "No amount of money invested will allow the current building to serve the needs of our community as it is today. Presque Isle needs a new Community Center that will serve our children, young families and elderly."

Steve and Lucy Richard, co-chairs of the Community Center Fundraising Campaign expressed their gratitude for the gift, saying,  “Bruce and his family’s extraordinary generosity is a testament to how important our community is to them. We sincerely appreciate their financial contribution to this worthwhile project and look forward to enjoying the new center with them.”

The Sargent family donation puts the fundraising campaign at 62% of the way towards the goal.

The Community Center campaign is also the 2014 special project of the Presque Isle Rotary Auction, to be held in early December. The Community Center Campaign and Presque Isle Rotary plan to mail out pledge cards in the next week, which will allow residents to pledge an amount each year for up to 10 years.

Any resident or business owner interested in a planned giving donation should contact Judy Dionne, Campaign Administrator at 760-2785 or info@presqueisleme.us.
