A 75-year-old Massachusetts woman was killed and three people from northern Maine were injured in a collision on Interstate 95 in Howland Sunday afternoon.

Maine State Police said Elaine Butkus of Phillipston, Mass. had pulled her 2002 Toyota Camry into the breakdown lane and then tried to cross the southbound lanes to reach the median crossover lane, which is reserved for emergency vehicles.

Police said vehicles in the driving lane narrowly missed Butkus' car. As she crossed into the passing lane, she was struck by a 2012 Chevrolet Malibu, driven by 41-year-old Jennifer Gervais of St. Agatha.

The southbound lanes of I-95 were closed while Fire and Rescue units from Lincoln and Howland attended the scene.

Gervais and her passengers, 43-year-old Kimberly Esancy and 19-year-old Shania Gervais, were taken to Penobscot Valley Hospital in Lincoln with what police said were non-life threatening injuries.
