According to Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland, police were called to the home at 645 Smyrna Center Road just before 8 p.m., after family members reported that a man was suicidal.

McCausland said 61-year-old Kenneth Kreyssig died after being shot in an armed confrontation with the two officers. Kreyssig lived at the home with his elderly mother.

State Police Sgt. Chad Fuller and Aroostook County Deputy Sheriff Stewart Kennedy have both been placed on administrative leave with pay, McCausland said.  As is standard with all officer involved shootings, the Maine Attorney General's Office is investigating.

Smyrna is 14 miles west of Houlton.
