HOWLAND, Maine (AP) — Maine State Police say investigators are casting doubt on the story of a trucker who says he was shot and robbed by two men on Interstate 95.

State police officials said on Thursday that evidence and follow-up interviews show that the alleged shooting and robbery in Howland did not occur as originally reported. Maine Department of Public Safety Steve McCausland says there was no attempt to target and rob the truck.

Police say a shot was fired, but not in the way that was reported by the truck driver.

The unidentified truck driver has not been charged. McCausland declined to comment if charges will be filed.
