Maine Democrats have re-elected Phil Bartlett of Gorham as party chairman at a time when progressives are calling for a recommitment to the state's rural working class.

Bartlett faced challenges by Diane Russell of Portland and Jonathan Fulford of Monroe.

Bartlett, a state Senator from 2004-20012, has worked the past few years on grassroots efforts and training potential candidates. He also supported Democrat Hillary Clinton's presidential bid.

Russell backed Independent U.S. Sen. Bernie Sander's campaign and spearheaded a push to reform how the party uses superdelegates.

Fulford is a former farmer who owns a Waldo County construction company. He has twice lost close races against Republican Senate President Michael Thibodeau, most recently last month.

Fulford said Maine Democrats' losses in the House and in the 2nd Congressional District demonstrate disconnect with voters that question the party's direction.

Peggy Schaffer of Vassalboro was re-elected vice chair.
