Paul Cauthen, ‘Hanging Out on the Line’ [Exclusive Premiere]
Texas-based singer-songwriter Paul Cauthen is debuting his new single “Hanging Out on the Line” exclusively for readers of The Boot.
Listeners may recognize Cauthen's name from his time with Sons of Fathers, the Texicana band that he co-founded in 2011; the group that notched multiple Top 10 albums on the Americana Music Chart and toured with Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes a few years back. Cauthen has since split with the band and is now recording as a solo artist, and this latest single is a sort of backwards love song.
"My buddy Austin Gilliam and I were drinking heavily at the River Road Ice House in New Braunfels, Texas. I was living in the cabin behind the bar, and I was getting ready to leave when Austin started with this hook, 'hanging out on the line.' So I came back, sat down, and we finished it soon after,” Cauthen recalls. ""Hanging Out on the Line" is that song you sing to the woman you love. That same woman that can crush your heart at any second."
“Hanging Out on the Line,” which readers can hear below, will appear on My Gospel, Cauthen’s debut album as a solo artist. Since leaving Sons of Fathers three years ago, he has channeled his frenetic energy into recording his upcoming new record at, among others, Willie Nelson’s Arlyn Studios in Austin, Texas, and FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, Ala.
