On a day when the New England Patriots rested some starters and let the others play just the first half, they lost their final regular season game 17-9 to the Buffalo Bills. With nothing to play for, Bill Belichick did not activate six regulars such as Rob Gronkowski, Julien Edelman, Brandon Browner and Dont'a Hightower. Most other starters including Tom Brady only played for the first half and became spectators for the remainder of the game. After the game Belichick did not attend his postgame press conference as he sought medical attention from the training staff. About an hour after the game he would not elaborate on the issue but told reporters that it was nothing serious.

Buffalo scored the only touchdowns of the game on their first two possessions on a touchdown pass from Kyle Orton and touchdown run by Boobie Gibson.

Brady completed 10 passes for 90 yards leading to a couple drives that ended with field goals. Rookie Jimmy Garoppolo played the second half and struggled at times because of poor pass protection. He went 8-16 passing for 80 yards, and had four rushes for 16 yards.

The Pats end the regular season with a 12-4 record and will have next week off as the playoffs begin. Their first postseason game will be in two weeks in Foxborough.
