UPDATE : 3PM State Police say the elderly driver whose car slammed into a paving roller this morning on the Maine Turnpike has died from his injuries.

According to Maine Department of Public Safety Spokesman Steve McCausland, Henry P. Roy, 89 , from Lewiston died shortly after his arrival at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston.  Troopers said Roy struck a construction barrel and then collided with the roller.

He was pinned inside his 2006 Mercury Marquis and was freed by rescue personnel, McCausland said.  The operator of the roller, Blaine Bradeen, 49, of Livermore was also taken to the hospital with leg injuries.  The crash took place as the northbound side had been reduced to one lane for paving operations just prior to the Gray exit ramp, according to McCausland.
