North Pond Hermit Could Be Released From Jail

AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — A man who lived alone in the Maine woods for nearly three decades may soon be admitted to a special court program and released from jail.

Christopher Knight is scheduled to appear in court on Monday.

He's expected to plead guilty to multiple burglary and theft charges and be admitted to the Co-Occurring Disorders Court.

In the special program, Knight can live in the community, work, and undergo counseling and treatment under the supervision of court officials.

Knight, known as the North Pond Hermit, was arrested in April. Police say the 47-year-old is responsible for as many as 1,000 burglaries over the years for food, clothing, camping and cooking gear and other supplies while living in the woods in the rural town of Rome for 27 years.
