It is already against the law here in Maine to smoke cigarettes in a vehicle with anyone under the age of 18 in the vehicle, and it looks like New Brunswick is following suit.

The New Brunswick-wide ban on smoking in vehicles containing children goes into effect on Friday. The new law falls under the province's Smoke-free Places Act.

RCMP will be enforcing the law province-wide.

Drivers will face a maximum $570 fine under the new legislation if they are found smoking in a vehicle with children under the age of 16 present.

Similar bans exist in Nova Scotia, Ontario, British Columbia and Yukon.
