Emergency crews were called to a fire at a home just north of Hartland around 4:45 a.m. Monday. The house was completely engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived.  RCMP say the body of 52-year-old Phyllis Roy was discovered inside the burned home.

Shortly after the fire was reported, an RCMP officer arrested a man inside a church in nearby Wicklow.  Cpl. Chantal Farrah stated in a press release that the man was taken into custody and as the investigation continued throughout the day, it was determined he was a suspect in the fire.

Ryan Ernest Roy appeared in Woodstock Provincial Court on Friday charged with the first degree murder of his mother Phyllis Roy.  He was also charged with arson and break and enter at the church.

Roy was remanded in custody and is scheduled to return to court on Friday, March 13 at 1:30 p.m.

The investigation is continuing.
