Maine's jobless rate last month dropped to the lowest level in over 7 years, according to workforce estimates released Tuesday by the state Labor Department.

The preliminary seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 4.8 percent for March was down from 5.0 percent in February and 5.8 percent one year ago. The number of unemployed people in the state declined 7,800 over the year to 32,100.

Maine Labor Commissioner Jeanne Paquette noted that the jobless rate was the lowest since February 2008.

The U.S. preliminary unemployment rate of 5.5 percent for March was unchanged from February and down from 6.6 percent one year ago. The New England unemployment rate averaged 5.2 percent.
