A philanthropic foundation is giving $810,000 to the Foundation for Maine's Community Colleges to help serve more students.

The Kresge Foundation is providing the money. The community college system says the money will enable the seven colleges in the system to join the Achieving the Dream network, a national initiative that aims to help more Americans achieve success in higher education.

Community college system president Derek Langhauser says the grant will advance the colleges' ability to serve students all over the state.

Langhauser says "Participation in ATD will enable the colleges to work one-on-one with national experts over the next three years, using evidence-based approaches to improving student outcomes. The award builds on a strategic focus on student success that has guided the MCCS in recent years."
