Old Town Coyotes Claim Eastern Maine B Crown in Overtime

The Eastern Maine Class B championship game between Old Town and Caribou went down to the wire Saturday, a defensive battle that ended with a 43-41 overtime victory for the Old Town Coyotes.

Old Town's senior captain Garvey Melmed hit two key 3-pointers, one to send the game to overtime and one in the extra session. He sunk two free throws with 20 seconds left in overtime to put the Coyotes up for good.

Melmed finished with 12 points, including all 5 Coyote points in overtime. Junior center Adam Richardson led Old Town with 13.

For Caribou, Dayne Savage led the team with 10 points.

It was the first Eastern Maine Class B title for the Coyotes. The Coyotes last won an Eastern Maine crown 23 years ago as a Class A team.

The Coyotes will face the Poland Knights -- who upset top-seed Greely in the Western Maine championship -- for the state championship at the Cross Insurance Center at 8:45 p.m.

MDI Steps Up To Beat Defending Champs Presque Isle

The MDI Trojans had been waiting for this day for a long time, the day they finally beat the perennial Class B powerhouse Presque Isle.

In their 63-51 win, the Trojans left little doubt who was the better team on this particular day in front a jam-packed Cross Insurance Center, claiming their first Eastern Maine championship since 2003.

In doing so, MDI ended Presque Isle's 64-game winning streak, a streak that included two state titles.

Senior forward Hannah Shaw led the Trojans with 23 points. Her sister, Kesley Shaw added 15. Junior guard Sarah Phelps had 12.

For Presque Isle, junior standout Hannah Graham was held to 10 points. Sophomore guard Taylor Williams led the Wildcats with 19 points, including five 3-pointers.

MDI will play in the state championship Friday night, Feb. 28, at the Cross Insurance Center at 7:05 p.m.

Hodgdon Hawks Win Eastern Maine Crown in Balanced Attack

The No. 3 Hodgdon Hawks claimed their first Eastern Maine Class D crown in 38 years, besting the No. 5 Southern Aroostook Warriors 49-37 at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor on Saturday.

Hodgdon junior forward Chris Hudson scored 25 points in the win and was named player of the game. Devon Quint added 9 for the Hawks.

For Southern Aroostook, junior guard Cameron Landry scored 17 points. Jackson Mathers added 8 and Alex White had 7 in the loss.

It was the first Class D regional crown for the Hawks since 1976. While in Class C, however, Hodgdon won Eastern Maine crowns in 1986, 1995 and 1996.

Hodgdon will play Western Maine champs Valley at 2:45 p.m. at the Augusta Civic Center.

The Washburn Beavers set a tournament scoring record on their way to a 74-51 win over the Van Buren Crusaders and their fourth straight Eastern Maine championship on Saturday.

The Beavers (20-2) scored 232 total points in the 2014 tournament, breaking the 2002 mark of 231.

Senior Carsyn Koch led the team with 19 points for the Beavers, who will play on Saturday in the state championship game. The Beavers have won the state title for three consecutive years.

"It's fun," Koch said after Saturday's game. "It never gets old."

Junior Mackenzie Worcester added 18 points and senior Nicole Olson had 17 for the Beavers.

For the Crusaders (17-5), University of Maine-bound Parise Rossignol finished with 21 points, leaving her just 7 points shy of the scoring record held by Cindy Blodgett. Rossignol also claimed an Eastern Maine Class D record, scoring 89 points in the three rounds of the tournament. The previous record was 82 points.

Washburn will play Western Maine champs Forest Hills Saturday, March 1 at 1:05 p.m. at the Augusta Civic Center.

Houlton Defeats Lee Academy for Class C East Championship

The top-seed and undefeated Houlton Shiretowners built a big lead over Lee Academy in the first half and kept their distance from the Pandas in the second half, finishing with a 49-33 win and a Eastern Maine Class C crown in the final game of Championship Saturday night at the Cross Insurance Center.

Houlton's Nick Guoid led all scorers with 15. Junior Kyle Bouchard had 13 points.

Cherif Fall had 12 points for the Pandas.

Calais Stymies Orono, Claims Another Eastern Maine Crown

The Calais Blue Devils backed up their No. 1 seed on Saturday night, jumping on the No. 2 Orono Red Riots early and not letting up until they sealed the 49-30 win and another Eastern Maine Class C title.

Junior captain Madison McVicar led the Blue Devils with 14 points. Kaitlyn Cundiff added 10.

Sophomore Hannah Clement had 11 for the Red Riots.
