Recently, there have been cases of child abuse crimes that have been committed in Maine. Law enforcement and prevention advocates are scheduled to discuss the problem at the State House.

Maine child abuse prevention advocates and law enforcement are scheduled to gather at the State House on Tuesday, March 27, to discuss ways to combat child abuse.

The news conference is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. in the Hall of Flags.

Among the speakers will be representatives from the Maine Chiefs of Police Association, Maine Children’s Trust, Maine Coalition Against Sexual Assault, and the Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention Councils.

State, county and local police will also participate in a variety of events throughout the state during April, which is nationally designated as Child Abuse Prevention Month.

Law enforcement has joined with local child abuse prevention councils to host a series of events bringing attention to child abuse prevention and to highlight the community partnerships that work on the issue.

Kate Perkins, Executive Director of the Maine Children’s Trust said,

“Maine law enforcement sees first-hand what happens when child abuse and neglect are not prevented, and the Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention Councils in partnership with the Maine Children’s Trust work diligently to ensure Maine children are safely nurtured.”

It has been reported that in 2017, over 2,100 cases of child abuse and neglect were reported in Maine, involving over 3,200 children.

Prevention efforts such as parent education, home visitation, and early childhood education programs give families the knowledge to provide a safe and stable household for children.
