With October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month, I felt the need to reach out to the men in our state that are suffering from cancer as well. Yes, men can get breast cancer just the same as women, but I want to switch gears a little. I’m talking about prostate cancer.

What is Prostate Cancer?

Prostate cancer is an uncontrolled growth of cells in the prostate gland that may spread to other parts of the body. Prostate cancer is the most common cancer found in men and strikes one in six American men. The American Cancer Society estimates that each year 1,460 Maine men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer and 170 will die of the disease. By comparison, 1,040 Maine women will be diagnosed with breast cancer and 200 will die of the disease.

I had a chance this week to speak with a prostate cancer survivor who is doing something to raise awareness and money for the Maine Coalition to Fight Prostate Cancer. Danny Webb is a Bangor business owner who is a survivor. Since the cause is so near and dear to Danny’s heart, he wants to do something to help.

Last year he put on an event featuring live music and karaoke at his business, Webb’s RV. He donated upwards of $500 on each unit he sold during the event and people who attended got a show as well. Danny told me that people from all over came to last year’s event, and lots of those people were from The County.

Last year’s fundraiser was such a great success that he wanted to make it an annual event. So, next Saturday, October 20th Webb is hosting the event again. The Bootleg Band, based in Bangor, will take to the stage performing their country rock music for a great cause. Danny invites people to bring their instruments and get up on stage themselves and sing a little karaoke too! There will be refreshments and door prizes as well. The event will run from 10AM to 4PM at Webb’s RV Center in Bangor. If you’re unable to attend but would like to donate to the cause feel free to mail your donation to Webb’s RV Center, C/O Maine Coalition to Fight Prostate Cancer at 1206 Hammond Street, Bangor, ME 04401.
