Medical Minute-Mental Health Month

One in 5 Americans is affected by mental health conditions. Stigma is toxic to their mental health because it creates an environment of shame, fear and silence that prevents many people from seeking help and treatment. The perception of mental illness won’t change unless we act to change it. Stop the stigma.

Below is some information from TAMC Psychiatric Nurse Practioner Christie Wolf from the Fort Fairfield Health Center:

Mental health is emotional, psychological and social well-being and it’s just as important as your physical health.

One in 5 Americans will experience a mental illness this year, including children. Suicide is the second leading cause of death among ages 15-34. There is over $190 billion in lost earnings per year due to mental illness.

There is no single cause of mental illness. Contributing factors include physical health problems, genetics, abuse, and trauma, to name a few. Unfortunately the stigma of mental illness prevents many from seeking help. Just remember you’re not alone and there are resources available. You can feel better.
