Joe Johnson is stepping down as Bangor High School girls basketball coach after three seasons but will continue to coach the girls soccer team.

The Rams finished in 5th place in the second year of Class AA (8-10). His team lost to Oxford HIlls in the North Region semi-final round.

"Mentally, I need to shut it down a little bit," said Johnson. "Starting in August with soccer through this time of the year with basketball is tough."

Johnson told his basketball players of his decision last week.

Johnson has led Bangor's girls soccer team to five regional titles and two state championships in Class A. Next season will be his 10th year as Rams coach.

Bangor athletic director Steve Vanidestine says they will post the coach opening in the coming days.

NOTE:  Among the basketball coaches who have already announced they are stepping down: John Donato (Lawrence), Tim Scott (Hampden), Brian McDormand (Old Town).
