The New England Patriots lost their first preseason game 31-24 to Jacksonville but don't blame Jimmy Garoppolo. On a night when the Pats defense gave up big plays, Jimmy G walked out of the stadium with a pretty good feeling.

He was 22-for-28, 235 yards and 2 toudchdowns in about 2.5 quarters of work.

The Patriots player who had the worst night was second year cornerback Cyrus Jones. He got beat twice on long bombs for TDs.

Tom Brady and most of the skill player starters did not play so it's impossible to assess some things.

A couple of rookies played well, WR Austin Carr caught four passes for 44 yards and a TD. Tight end Jacob Hollister had seven catches for 116 yards.

Next up for the Patriots, at Houston next Saturday night in their second preseason game.

NOTE: NFL commissioner was at Foxboro Stadium for the game. It was his first visit since the Deflategate issue. Goodell is expected to be back for the NFL season opener on September 7th.
