We are close to three weeks into the initial season of five class high school basketball in Maine. Most teams are taking a couple of days off for the holidays.

Here are some of the observations of the North Region two and a half weeks in...

Class AA (Boys): Everyone thought Portland, Deering and Cheverus would be at or near the top...and they are. But senior Andrew Fleming is making sure his Oxford Hills Vikes are a force to be reckoned with a 5-1 record.

Class AA (Girls): Already every team has at least one loss. Edward Little HS(4-1) is on top of the Heal Points. How about Lewiston at 4-2?

Class A (Boys): How about that trio of teams at the top - Brewer, Hampden and Oceanside. All enter the break with 6-0 records. The Witches and Broncos will meet twice during the season. The Mariners play Brewer once but do not play Hampden.

Class A (Girls): Coach John Donato's defending state champion Lawrence Bulldogs look like the strongest team again. Senior Nia Irving is turning in a double-double every night! Has Messalonskee or Gardiner got enough to battle the Bulldogs?

Class B (Boys): The Orono Red Riots and the Washington Academy Raiders are the only undefeated teams standings. Guess what? They meet in East Machias late Monday afternoon. MDI, Winslow, Ellsworth and Old Town are some teams that may have something to say about Class B  before its over.

Class B (Girls): MDI and Ellsworth are #1 and #2, both 5-0. KVAC's Winslow is also unbeaten. The Houlton girls are 5-1 are losing to MDI. How serious the knee injury to Shires' Katie Condon?

Class C (Boys): Just one question here...can anyone in this class handle the 7-0 George Stevens Academy Eagles?

Class C (Girls): This is an interesting division. The top 8 teams are separated by less than 8 Heal Points and those 8 teams are spread all over the North Region...Dexter, Harrington, Fort Fairfield and Calais.

Class D (Boys): Every team in this division has at least one loss already. Can you say wide open?

Class D (Girls): Go figure - the top team at the break is Southern Aroostook HS in Dyer Brook. The Warriors have got to be the state's youngest team. 8 players on the roster - 4 freshmen an 4 8th-graders. It is weird to see Washburn in the 8th spot with a 3-1 record.
